The Red-Light District

Forget what you’ve been told. This is way beyond anything you have experienced. Sex shops, peep shows and sexy girls competing for your attention. It’s weird, it’s wonderful!

The term “Red light district” apparently comes from the 1890’s when railway workers would leave red lanterns outside the brothels, so they could be easily located in case they were needed in the middle of the night to help with faulty trains etc.

Today the ladies that pose under the red lights are taxpayers. Yes, prostitution in Amsterdam is legal and strictly governed by the town counsel. The Dutch is a very tolerant nation. And yes, its true, you can order a joint over the counter.

The red light district is more than this though. The 14th century architecture is part and package of what makes it interesting. So if you’re not into the whole kinky thing, look up and admire the building.
