Paris Montmartre & Sacre Coeur

Being the highest hill in the city, standing at 130m, Montmartre is the perfect place to start a tour of Paris. The name Montmartre translates as “Mount of Martyr”, - your tour guide will tell you the weird and wonderful story behind this name.

This little village is where artists like Van Gogh, Picasso and Dali spent their time painting. In the 1800 Montmartre was seen as the main artistic centre of Paris and today it is still buzzing with local artists keen to paint the portraits of the village’s visitors.

The Sacre Coeur
The basilica of the “Sacred Heart” has to be one of the highlights of a visit to Paris. Situated on the Montmartre hill, it is said to be the highest building in Paris. This church was built between 1871 and 1912 dedicated to the 58 000 soldiers who lost their lives during the Franco Prussian war between France and Germany. Yes you have to climb all those stairs to the top, but trust me, its all worth it! Entrance is free, but you are not allowed to take photos, oh yes and ladies, cover up those shoulders.
